BLACK RAINBOW - all the colours

Take a look at the real rainbow.

Questions of race, ethnicity, equity and identity have been on my mind.

ALL THE COLOURS - front, 1400mm x 1250mm Foundation paper pieced using ‘Quilt it like FUTURA - lower case’, inherited plain cotton fabrics.

I’m well aware that social commentary and my point of view is informed by a lot of things that place me in a position of privilege.

I am a cis-gendered, middle-aged white man. Top of the privilege pile. Maybe down a single rung because I am a gay, cis-gendered, middle-aged white man.

Our society is set up to cater to our every whim, and there is a systemic bias to ensure those whims are met way more often that they aren’t.

It’s important for anyone who is in a position of power and privilege to remember where they are, and to use that position wisely, compassionately.

This quilt is about seeing colour - TRULY seeing colour.

The skin tones are used on the word the right way around, the traditional rainbow colours are a reflection of what is reality.

The overlapping rainbow shapes in the quilting are completed in black thread on black fabric. The rainbows are the texture that underpins what we can clearly see, they are complex, many-sized and many-shaped. Invisible to the eye until you investigate and look further into the quilt.

In nature a beautiful rainbow only ever exists to our eyes because they are a reflection of sunlight on water droplets. Water is colourless, makes up most of who we are and is essential for life.
