WHAT’S WRONG WITH FAIRIES?

small quilt made to resemble a square piece of fairy bread buttered white bread with glass seed beads of many colours to resemble hundreds and thousands

2023

24cm x 24cm

Hand dyed cotton, quilting cotton, bamboo cotton batting, thread, glass beads.

I could never understand why FAIRY was supposed to be an insult when their bread was the best thing ever at a party.

Words as innocent and beautiful as fairy can very quickly be weaponised and turned against someone just being their authentic self.

This small quilt is intended to tweak all of the nostalgia nerves we have of kid’s birthday parties - and call into question when we each began to use language as weapons.

Teasing and bullying are part of every child’s experience, but why? Where do we learn to diminish and demean through language?

(This piece sold at exhibition and has made it’s way to it’s forever home)
